ARE YOU IN THE UPPER OR LOWER CLASS?
A person in Pompeii would have been in the upper class or lower class, the would be a senator, equestrian, common, freed person or slave.
The upper class consisted of the senators and equestrians. The senator class included the families and men who served in the senate. Men of the senatorial class wore the tunic with broad stripes (laticlavi). The equestrian class is made up of men who owned a property worth at least 400,000 sesterces (the currency of Pompeii). The families of these men would have also been considered equestrians. If an equestrian was elected for the senate who would have then become senator (although this was not easy of common).
The lower class consisted of commons, freed people, and slaves. A common was a citizen, these people were born as citizens. A common male wore a toga. A freed person was a man and woman who had been slaves but had bought their freedom or been manumitted (freed). They were not fully free because they had various restrictions on their rights and owed certain duties to their former masters, who now became their patrons.
